03/01 This was the last of five days closure for the Chipping Sodbury Tunnel due to flooding which saw a number of cancellations and reduced speed running. 47786 arrived during the morning on a 09.00 engineers trip from Westbury formed of crippled wagons. The loco shunted the yard before returning to Westbury during the afternoon, and was used for trainee driver experience runs in the day going to Avonmouth light and return passing Hallen at 13.18.

04/01 The Badminton route was reopened during the morning, and was used by at least two Avonmouth-Didcot coal trains and the 6M33 Avonmouth-Wembley freight during the first couple of hours as well as passenger workings. 37717 + 66093 + 66127 passed light-engine, having run via Gloucester (due to the closure of the Severn Tunnel for maintenance) from Cardiff to Westbury for weekend engineering work. 66239 worked a Portbury-Rugeley coal train north formed of 20 HTA wagons, 66148 headed an Avonmouth-Aberthaw MGR, 66087 worked Westbury-Machen empty Hanson stone hoppers (returning the loaded train later) both via Gloucester and 60077 was the Tytherington stone trip loco from Westbury. Coal sector liviered (and recently reinstated) 56104 worked Hertfordshire Railtours 'Walsall Concerto' (1Z27 07.58 Finsbury Park-Nuneaton) originally booked to run via Kemble and Stroud, passed at near enough to time at 11.30. 37689 + 37695 took the train forward from Gloucester (via the Lickey) to Bescot for 60008 to Nuneaton. 66712 finished the trip off as 1Z28 16.46 Nuneaton-Finsbury Park.

An interesting container service which passed at 15.00 was 6Z44 10.00 Woking-Newport ADJ, being routed via Salisbury and Melksham, to the Severn Tunnel. The reason for the train, which was headed by 47789, took this route was believed to be due to flooding in the Oxford area.

08/01 37717 + 37682 were booked to work the 6A21 03.34 Cardiff Tidal siding fuel tanks, but only the latter took the train forward and returned the 6B05 15.31 Didcot-Cardiff Tidal empties. 57 004 passed at 12.25 with the 4O51 Millbrook containers.

12/01 At least two First/GW services were diverted due to flooding (again!) in Chipping Sodbury tunnel. The 08.30 Paddington-Plymouth (formed with power cars 43185+43177) and the 10.15 Paddigton-Plymouth(43002+43174) were routed via Basingstoke, Salisbury to Exeter Central and a reverse to the west.

The loco and wagon type were however not identified. 19/01 A tank train with no loco was unusually seen at Westerleigh Murco depot.

20/01 66001 worked Avonmouth - Tyne Yard "Boxes", 66042 Tytherington "Stone" and 66230 with a loaded MGR from Portbury. 66503 passed with the 4O51 Millbrook containers at 10.48 and 47776 worked the 1E41 17.23 Plymouth-Low Fell mails and 47727 was recorded on the 1M65 19.15 Plymouth-London service.

22/01 60055 was over at Westerleigh with the Port Clarence fuel tankers, the inward train being recorded passing Gloucester at 09.05. Also at Westerleigh, the redundant household fridges stored in the former refuse container siding which was closed in March 2001, are being removed. Whether the siding is to be brought back into use is unknown. 66543 was the 4O51 loco and also during part of the afternoon the Severn Tunnel was closed due to a cabling fault.

The Severn Tunnel was again closed during the day. 47746 + 47773 top 'tailed a South Wales bound Serco test train passing at 12.36 and 47776 worked the 1V33 16.02 Paddington-Plymouth mails.

27/01 Not a good evening for passengers travelling to South Wales from either London or Bristol, as two separate incidents caused considerable delays, firstly further problems with the signalling controlled by the Slough centre and the temporary closure of the Severn Tunnel. (For the record there were also problems between Gloucester and Newport). As a result of this 165119 made a trip between TM and Parkway and return. Freight services, however, were plentiful starting with 66015 working a delayed ADJ - Wembley service, 66010 empty MGR to Portbury, 66040 empty MGR for Avonmouth, 66041 loaded train for Didcot, 66004 loaded train for the Midlands, 66233 light engine to Avonmouth and 66206 Margam - Fawley empty tanks (Fuel Train). 66140 arrived "in the yard" with the Tytherington "Stone" and remained at the head of its train for about an hour and then carried out shunting manoeuvres to re-arrange the wagons, normally this service passes through non stop.

28/01 37294 worked the 6L46 06.20 Bridgend-Dagenham Ford car parts train but failed near Newport, 67004 was also in trouble failing at Hullavington on the 1V44 23.20 Willesden-Swansea mails being assisted forward by 47737, 89 minutes late. 31/01 57003 worked the 4V50 (and assumed 4O51) containers and coal-sector liveried 60091 was on the 6B33 Robeston-Theale fuel empties. By the end of this month all Freightliner Class 57 locos (except 57007) and Freightliner 66501-66505 and 66532-66543 (inclusive) had powered the 4V50/4O51 Southampton-Wentloog containers (the service being introduced in April last year, as 4Z50/4Z51). There were also three instances of Freightliner Class 47 haulage.

The Southampton - Salisbury line was closed at Dean causing delays during the morning and there were problems at Chipping Sodbury tunnel also with flooding which saw diversions, including Avonmouth-Didcot coal via Day's curve and Box. Passenger trains were calling at Patchway (instead of Parkway) with road coach connections between the two. The Severn Beach line was also closed due to the discovery of a body on the track at Redland. 66083 departed Bridgwater at 11.35 with three cargowaggons forming the return Newport trip. New timetable changes have seen Virgin XC reduce their Bristol-Birmingham services with now one train every two hours (instead of one an hour) calling at Gloucester.

LOCO AND UNIT NEWS

Class 37
37422 was named "Cardiff Canton" on 31/01/03 by Barry Evans, EWS Head of Safety and former Area Fleet Manager. The loco had been given the equivalent of an "F" exam by the depot staff and was in immaculate condition. The bogies had been given a full overhaul (the first ever at Canton), which included painting the axlebox covers an attractive red. The power unit had received a full overhaul (in situ) and auxiliary parts had been sent away to Crewe and Doncaster for refurbishment. The horns were of polished brass and a Qtron engine data recorder had been fitted. Former C&ARS member Glyn Attley, who was the first official Treasurer for the Society, observed the ceremony! He has been a fitter at Canton for many years. 37406 and 37417 were in the maintenance shed undergoing heavy overhaul. All operational 37/4s at Canton will be fitted with TPWS this year, which suggests several more years of service for these locos.

Class 158
158827 was released from Doncaster in black "Ginsters" advertising livery, joining 158841 which already carries similar vinyls. It is to promote the sandwiches sold from the trolley on Wales & Borders and Wessex Trains services. A further three 158s are to be treated in this manner.
