DUNGENESS

This location has many houses that were built using railway carriages. We were fortunate enough to meet many kind people who allowed us to view their houses, and businesses, however future visitors should note:

The gardens leading to people's properties are not well marked in some places and care should be taken when visiting to keep to paths.

Some households declined our request to view and permission should always be sought prior to attempting viewing.

Due to the sensitive nature of the area visitors should be prepared to co-operate with the police, who we found to be friendly and efficient.

The following properties are listed in rough order from the power station end, with the number of carriages in the houses in brackets. Some houses without carriages included for completeness.

SUNRAY (1)

ELRAY (formerley AMEOBIC HOUSE) (1) SECR part body with 3 compartments surviving.

WESTBURY (1) - identified as SECR 205, a luggage van.

WESTWARD HO (0) - Originally built containing a carriage, it was damaged and removed when 2 other carriages were blown up nearby for the filming of "Bellman and True" a feature film which was released in 1987. That part of the house was subsequently rebuilt to look as though it still contains a railway carriage and is very convincing.

MARINA (1) LSWR 21 SR 7936 - Carriage identified from an archive photo during post-trip research.

STONIHOE (1) thought to be an SECR 3rd.

OPENSHORE (1) SECR 3rd.

DUNRUNNIN (1) SECR Luggage Van 1801 birdcage brake - Carriage identified from an archive photo during post-trip research.

SEA BREEZE (1) a brake vehicle - probably SECR.

MOSSY COTTAGE (2) a LBSCR 5 compartment and a SECR 4 compartment.

CAITHNESS (ART SHOP/GALLERY) (3) 2 SECR (built at Ashford) carriage bodies and a horsebox.

ROSSLYN (0)

Quiet Moorings (2)

UN-NAMED HOUSE Painted white (1)

(PROVIDENCE) (1) LSWR 18 later SR 7806 - Carriage identified from an archive photo and design drawings during post-trip research.

SULACO (1)

LEVEN (1) LCDR

JESMOND (1)

THE TRIUMPH (2)

VENTURE (1) LSWR 5 compartment Third.

SAMOA (1)

SHERBERN (2) SECR 4 compartment assumed and LBSCR 4 compartment assumed.

(FORT WHENDAY) (1) An LSWR Parcels Luggage Van thought to be number 55 built 1887, which later became SR 5055 then 1255.

CHANNEL VIEW (1) - SECR.

PIXIE LEE (1) SECR 4 compartment composite or brake.

HELVETIA (0).

There was one further body in an un-named house somewhere between Jesmond and Channel View.

ABERDOUR and Blue Cross were not closely examined as the owner declined permission.

Towards the beach was b/o BR wagon 780023.

Four (disused?) narrow guage, hand worked, fish railways were noted, including some which were incomplete. One had a 4w flat wagon on.

Notes: 784720 was believed to be the identity of ROF 25 at the East Lancs Railway, and was recorded as such on the November 2013 CARS trip to the ELR. The body of 784720 including worksplate was found at Iron Wharf Boatyard. We therefore assume the ELR wagon is a different identity.

783462 was believed to be a grounded body only at Patrishow in Powys. As with the example above, the body at Faversham still had the worksplate so it is assumed the one at Powys is a different identity.

Any information on the identities of the ELR or Powys vehicles would be gratefully received by the Society.
