R. & N. CESSFORD, WHANLAND FARM, FARNELL, BRECHIN  [NO 621543]

[17EL p252 - per update list 2 - previously listed in 7EL p214] Visit.  This is the main address for Cessford’s haulage business, however the loco was moved off site a few years ago.

10     4wDM  R/R  S&H 7505/1967 in yellow (off track)

The history of this loco is quite interesting having been delivered new to the British Aluminium Co at Invergordon, later being joined by S&H 7516.  It was first listed in 4EL as OOU, but subsequently listed in 5, 6 and 7EL before being deleted.  However, Cessford’s acquired the loco in the 1970’s from an infant Brechin Railway in order to meet a contract with Beard’s Malt to shunt 60 vans per day at Arbroath Goods Yard.  Initially this had been undertaken using tractors, but this was not approved by the railway authorities.  The contract with Beard’s ceased in 1983 and the loco was moved to storage within a barn at Whanland Farm.  The loco was later moved to outdoor storage at its current location.  The loco is powered by a Ford engine and was last started about 2 years ago.

Three plates are carried on the loco - a Strachan & Henshaw plate, a Whiting Trackmobile plate and a Barlow Myers Ltd plate (agents).

The trackmobile, weighing 7-8 tons, is still for sale for scrap value and Cessford’s are prepared to deliver the loco to any location

Sincere thanks to Martin Cessford for facilitating the visit.

We were advised that the 4wWE BTH/1908 loco, ex Summerlee, which arrived at the Museum in 2015 is located at Maryfield Tram Depot, Forfar Road, Dundee DD4 7EY [NO 414320].  This building was viewed en-route to the previous location and appears to be in a good state of preservation with tramlines set into cobble stones in the forecourt stretching to Forfar Road.  We were told that restoration of the loco has been ongoing and it is currently being re-assembled - unfortunately a tight schedule prevented a visit to this location.

Since our visit the Museum has announced it is to receive £80,000 in grant funding towards the restoration of the Maryfield Depot.

With thanks to Brian for organising and Jimmy McDonnell and his volunteers for hosting our visit.
