This is the web site of the Cardiff & Avonside Railway Society, where you
can find information about the Society and the benefits of becoming a
member.
This web
site contains details of forthcoming Society
trips and how to join the society. There are
extracts from back issues of the monthly magazine and trip reports to give
an idea of the contents of the magazine and the scope of the trips run by the
Society.
Being a member of the Society has many benefits. Cheaper fares on Society
trips, a monthly magazine reporting on local notes
and news, stock alterations, reports on preservation and industrial sites, and
trip reports of both Society and members own visits. We also offer discounts
from time to time on other Society publications through our links with those
Societies.
About the Society
The Society was formed in 1971 with the aim of enabling railway enthusiasts
in the south Wales and Avonside areas to visit places of railway
interest. Since the Society was formed it has successfully run over 400
trips all over the country.
In the years following, the Society's membership rose to over 350 and regular
trips to BR locations were organized. As the needs of our membership has
changed, the trips run by the Society have been adapted
to meet
them. This flexibility will continue and we actively encourage participants on
our trips and members to provide feedback on our trips and ideas for future
trips.
The current trips being organized cover
industrial, preserved, plant locations along with mainline locations where new
stock is being delivered all over the country. Recent years have seen trips to
the Isle of Man and the first one to the Republic of Ireland in 2011.
The Society normally run 11 trips per year,
these are usually of one day duration although the trip run at Easter is usually
a more extensive one of three or four days. Wherever possible these trips
will provide a balanced yet intensive visit to the selected area.
The Society has forged links with many other
Societies and individuals to enhance the service that we provide to our
respective memberships. The Society is keen to enter into new relationships that
will produce mutual benefits for our respective memberships.
